Teacher Created Lesson Plan—Human Activity and the Earth's Environment
Kimberly Corpening, Science Teacher, Freedom High School, Morganton, NC

Subject Area: Physical Science

Grade Level: 10-12

Learning Objective
Students will be able to identify the effects of human activity on the environment and the influence of issues on weather and climate.

Computer Functions
Students will create a database listing and classifying as many effects on the environment both positive and negative as possible. The effects that they choose should include those of human influence as well as influences of weather and climate. The database will allow students to brainstorm and organize their ideas.

The students will research their findings using various resources including the Internet. Upon completion of their research, the students should be prepared to present an informative PowerPoint presentation about the varying effects on our environment.

Specify Problem
The world’s environments are extremely fragile. The world itself is in a very fragile state. Our environment is failing due to the actions of people. What are the long term effects of the depletion of our natural resources? What are the long and short term effects of pollution? How can we make a difference? How do you contribute to global warming and how can it be changed?

Data Manipulation
A database will help the students organize their thoughts. The students will be able to group the effects of certain events on the environment. The students will be able to categorize the effects in columns and separate them into human, weather, or climate effects. The student can also go a step further and use the database to identify a chain reaction of effects.

Results Presentation
Each student will create a PowerPoint presentation with explanations and details about the information they collected on the environmental effects of people, weather, and climate on the environment.
