Wanda Samson of Fremont High School shares a lesson plan and rubric on Voice Recognition that she implemented in her Advanced Keyboarding Applications class.
Memo Assignment
Before you utilize this lesson plan, allow some time for your students to practice using Voice Recognition. This may be done by assigning them some simple documents to dictate. Voice Recognition will be used to compose and "voice" four memos. Each memo will be different, providing the opportunity to use writing skills along with Voice Recognition.
Each memo will be graded based on 1) content, 2) following directions, and 3) good English usage. After the memo is checked and corrected (if necessary), it will be given to the teacher listed.
Directions:
For each memo, use the current date. VOICE RECOGNITION should be the subject.
Use positive comment ONLY-no whining or complaining. Grades will be based on the first attempt printed. Errors will be marked, corrected, and the memo reprinted. The "correct" memo goes to your teacher.
Memo 1: To [insert your name], your [insert your class period] teacher
Paragraph 1: Explain three reasons why Voice Recognition is valuable.
Paragraph 2: Thinking back to the first demos of Voice Recognition, what were your thoughts? Did you think you would be able to do this? Why or why not?
Paragraph 3: What were your feelings when you dictated your first document?
Memos 2-4: To [insert 3 of the student’s other teachers]
Paragraph 1: Give a brief explanation of your Advanced Keyboarding Applications class and the Voice Recognition requirement. Explain that Voice Recognition is an input technology that involves talking to your computer, which then records those dictated words on the screen. This memo is a required assignment for Advanced Keyboarding Applications class.
Paragraph 2: Elaborate on the value of Voice Recognition.
Paragraph 3: Share a positive memory about the class and teacher to whom you are writing. Examples - Something that happened in class, thankfulness for having this teacher, a specific thing the teacher did to make the class interesting and/or fun.
See the following rubric for requirements.
Total value - 400 points.
