Directions to the Student
In this assessment you will complete an activity designed to simulate a real work situation. You are to perform this assessment as if you were an employee for the company named in the scenario. Your evaluator will provide you with all necessary materials and instructions. As you perform the assessment, the evaluator will review your performance with you and answer any questions you may have. The assessment scenario is as follows:
You work for: The Midwest Banner Company
Your job title is: Administrative Assistant, Sales
You work in the corporate offices of The Midwest Banner Company (MBC). MBC sells flags, flagpoles, and patriotic products that have been made in the USA. Their corporate headquarters is located at 1990 Fair Oaks Avenue, Springfield, IL 62701.
In their sales department, MBC employs a sales manager (Mr. Jefferson), an administrative assistant to the sales manager, and three salespeople in the corporate office who cover sales in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, and Ohio. They have five outside sales representatives who cover regional territories in all other states. Also included in the department are four customer service people who work out of the corporate office and act as support for the sales staff and liaisons between the outside sales reps and the sales manager.
MBC’s annual sales meeting is a time for all of the sales staff to be together to reflect on the previous year and set goals for the next year. The outside sales people, who work solely on a commission basis, are also recognized for their sales contributions for the previous year. This year the accounting staff will be doing a special training session for new order entry software that has been purchased.
Mr. Jefferson has asked you to prepare an agenda for the upcoming annual sales meeting. You will be provided with a memo containing the information needed for the agenda. As well as being used at the meeting, this agenda will later be used as an attachment to an e-mail that will be sent to the outside sales representatives.
In addition, Mr. Jefferson has asked you to prepare the 2-day itinerary for this event. You will be provided a second memo with all the information needed for the itinerary. This memo also contains instructions to compose an e-mail with attachments to send to the outside sales personnel who will be attending the meeting. Prepare a cover letter e-mail with some general information and instructions to open the attachments that will include the agenda, the 2-day itinerary and a separate document with local hotel and entertainment information. Please be sure to copy Mr. Jefferson, Sales Manager, on the e-mail.
