Students in the arts have long used portfolios to showcase their work, but now students in many different types of courses have begun collecting their work in portfolios. A good portfolio helps a student see all that they have accomplished in one place. It also can help teachers assess the progress a student has made over the course of a year or semester. In the past, collecting work in one place meant putting hard copies of the work in an actual folder. Naturally, this limits the amount of people that can easily view their work. With e-portfolios, students can place their work online so that it is available to be viewed by potential employers, parents, other students, and teachers. Some states, such as Rhode Island, are even using digital portfolios as a way to assess student proficiency in lieu of testing. This issue of Technology Turning Points will help you incorporate e-portfolios into your classroom. This issue of Technology Turning Points will give you some great ideas and resources for incorporating portfolios/e-portfolios in your classroom.
